Based in Stowmarket, Suffolk, Modern Arnis UK teaches the Filipino martial art of Arnis, also known as Eskrima or Kali. Training centres on weapons such as sticks and blades, alongside hand-to-hand techniques, joint locks, grappling (dumog) and disarming methods. Modern Arnis itself was developed in the 1960s by Remy Presas as a safer way to train and a practical self-defence system.
Filipino martial arts are often a good fit for people who want something a little different from typical striking or grappling styles. Weapon work tends to build co-ordination and timing, and many students find the mix of armed and unarmed techniques keeps sessions varied while offering useful self-defence skills.
