Aiki Dojo Downpatrick
About
Traditional Aikido has been taught in South Down since mid October 2005, when Aiki Dojo Downpatrick opened to give local people a place to practise and learn the art. Sessions take place at the Down Leisure Centre in Downpatrick, with separate classes for beginners and more advanced students. Classes are for adults, welcoming women and men of any age, and the dojo has sister clubs in Belfast and the North West.
Aikido is a Japanese martial art built around blending with an attacker's movement, using throws, joint locks and controlled falls rather than strikes. Newcomers to an Aikido dojo can generally expect a focus on safe falling, steady repetition with a partner and gradual progress at their own pace.
